Why we exist

Hey, I’m Drew Patterson.

Basic Industries was built on the belief that work has the power to change lives. I started in stakes, grew the company into the largest producer in Colorado, and then moved the whole operation to Kansas to do more of what matters: build a serious manufacturing business and create real opportunity for people coming home from prison.

For years, we’ve partnered with correctional programs and workforce-development initiatives to provide meaningful employment, real job skills, and a pathway toward successful reentry.

Products are only part of our story.

A different kind of manufacturing company

Wood stakes are a commodity.
We know that.

There are many places you can buy wood stakes. What separates suppliers isn’t usually the product itself. It’s reliability. It’s service. It’s the ability to deliver when demand spikes and the market gets hard.

Years ago, labor shortages became one of the biggest challenges facing our company. Rather than accepting the limitation, we chose a different path, a manufacturing model focused on creating opportunity while solving one of the biggest problems in American manufacturing: workforce availability.

The result is a workforce that is motivated, committed, skilled, and proud of what they produce.

Why we believe in second chances

Our story isn’t about prisons.
It’s about people.

Fathers. Sons. Brothers. Friends. Neighbors. People who have made mistakes. People who have experienced hardship. People who want a chance to build a different future.

Through years of working alongside justice-involved individuals, we’ve witnessed something remarkable. When people are given responsibility, meaningful work, and the opportunity to develop skills, they often exceed expectations.

  • Confidence restored.
  • Communities strengthened.
  • Lives changed.

We’re not interested in defining people by their worst day. We’re interested in helping create opportunities for their next chapter.

File 04, A Friend Named Danny

One of those stories
belongs to Danny.

Danny came to Basic Industries while serving time. Over the years he became more than an employee, he became part of our community. Our children loved him. The unicorn tattoo probably helped.
